The liver is one of the body's most essential and hardest working and organs. Prolonged alcohol abuse can result in serious and permanent damage to your liver. Your liver is one of the body's hardest working organs. It has two lobes, (right and left) and a saddle shape, separated by a band of connective tissue called falciform ligament. It works non stop, daily. It is an inspection station, a garbage disposal unit and a filtration system operating as one unit. It filters one and half liters of blood every minute. It converts ammonia (the gas that smells like rotten eggs),which is a toxic waste product formed from processing protein and nitrogen, containing compounds in the body, into urea, so that it can be excreted by the kidneys. The liver metabolizes drugs and alcohol and gets rid of the by-products that result from the breakdown of these substances.
