Digestion and nutrition. March 2022 Newsletter - By Dr Jerry J Masarira, Naturopath D. CBIS.

Proper digestion of food is essential in maintaining a healthy functioning body. The body and mind must be in a relaxed mood for digestion to properly occur.

Eating and assimilating food are two different things. When one is eating, the most important thing is proper digestion. If you are not digesting well, you will be generating rancid, fermented, putrefied and toxic compounds that can cause health issues in every organ and system in your body. Your health depends on proper digestion and nutrient assimilation.

Poor digestion is now an epidemic problem. This has created more sales for Acid blocker medications, as well as causing gallbladder removals and several other stomach issues.

A lack of adequate hydrochloric acid usually results in several major problems such as:

1)Poor digestion and absorption of proteins or amino acids, which are necessary for more than fifty thousand functions in the body such as acting as a neurotransmitter production for regulation of mood, maintenance and repair of cells, organs, bones, tissues and many others.

2)Poor absorption of key minerals such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, boron, iron and zinc. Zinc is required to make hydrochloric acid. When zinc is not absorbed, it creates absorption problems.

3)Poor hydrochloric acid production by parietal cells in the stomach, which also impairs the proper vitamin B12’s digestion, which is essential for neurological health. This impairment leads to under-secretion of the INTRINSIC FACTOR essential to vitamin B12’s absorption in the gut. B12 is a key methyl donor, necessary for cardiovascular and brain health. It is also used to make red blood cells. Its prolonged deficiency can result in irreversible neurological damage, severe mood dysregulation, impaired cognitive functioning and dementia, as well as macrocytic anemia, (a type of anemia that causes unusually large red blood cells),as well as heart disease.

4. Poorly digested mass of rotting chyme in the stomach will wreak havoc elsewhere in the digestive tract, including causing fermenting and bloating. This generates irritation and inflammation in the small intestine. This in turn causes mucosal and microvillous erosion, which is termed, LEAKY GUT SYNDROME. This is a hyperporosity of the otherwise selectively permeable membrane of the small intestine. Poorly digested proteins can enter the bloodstream and be treated as antigens or foreign invaders by the immune system. This results in allergies or food sensitivities as well as creating  autoimmune disorders.

5. Enhanced vulnerability to parasites and other food-borne illnesses.

There are many reasons for hydrochloric acid insufficiency. The acid is only produced in the presence of proteins and is inhibited by the presence of sugars and starches. Thyroid hypofunctioning, (low-functioning thyroid), suppresses the production of gastrin, a hormone necessary for signaling hydrochloric acid production. There are also other essential necessary nutrients, such as B1, zinc, and vitamin C, needed for hydrochloric acid production.

Remember digestion begins in the brain. It is a parasympathetic process, meaning that the body and mind must be in a relaxed mood for digestion to properly occur.

An extremely low pH value, about 0.8, almost pure acid – signals to the pyloric valve (the gateway to the stomach) that preliminary healthy digestion is complete. And like a key, the proper pH value opens the valve and allows the happily digested contents into the duodenum. Improper pH signals, (inadequate hydrochloric acid pH values), can delay this gastric emptying, sometimes for hours, resulting in the fermentation of stomach contents and potentially generating reflux symptoms.
