The second Brain –January 2022 Newsletter: Written By Dr. Jerry J. Masarira, Naturopath D. CBIS.

How our brain performs is directly influenced by what we eat.

The health of the gut is connected to your mental health. Millions of nerves link up the gut and the brain. That is why brain health is influenced by what one eats.

The health of one’s gastrointestinal system is extremely important for your well-being. Largely responsible for the critical functions of the body’s digestive and immune systems, beneficial bacteria in the digestive system have the capacity of affecting your body’s vitamin and mineral absorbency, hormone regulation, digestive, vitamin production, immune response, and ability to eliminate toxins, not to mention your overall mental health.

You will notice that there is a connection of gut flora to conditions such as depression, anxiety, ADHD and autism etc.

People with Alzheimer’s disease exhibit distinct differences in their gut bacteria. They also have reduced micro biodiversity, as well as few noteworthy differences in bacteria abundance.

There was a study that showed a lower level of firmicutes and actinobacteria, along with higher levels of bacteroidetes that existed within within Alzheimer’s patients. There are as many as 500 million neurons dwell in the gastrointestinal system and are connected to the brain via the vagus nerve.

Gut bacteria have access to the brain via a veritable superhighway and can influence it in both good and bad ways.

These agents also affect glucose metabolism, indicating an impact on diabetes and obesity.

With a better understanding of the importance of gut flora and how the balance in the gut affects the brain, its no wonder that the gut is becoming known as the second brain.

As we understand that the second brain is under attack, it is apparent that our bodies and minds are dealing with a chemical assault that comes from every direction.

Dr David Brownstein wrote in his book way of repairing your leaky gut as 4 Rs:-

1.)   Remove – discontinue eating foods that are toxic, dangerous, allergens, or in any other way distressing to your system.

2.)Replace – introduce good bacteria to your digestive tract by beginning the habit of adding probiotics.

3.)Reinocculate – maintain a balance of healthy nutrients, therapies and supplements that promote good gut health and keep inflammation at bay.

4.)Repair – follow these steps faithfully and allow your gut time to heal.

Keep your gut clean and that will help keep your brain clean and healthy.
