Your Brain: September 2020 Newsletter, by Dr Jerry J Masarira, (Naturopath D. CBIS)
I need you to have a picture of how your brain works. You will appreciate this when anyone you know starts having brain health problems. I will not go into complicated details but will give you an idea that will keep you out of the dark.
Your brain is too complex to explain and to understand because no human being will ever understand The Brain.
What we know, and how it functions, how it generates ideas and keeping of records. How it understands and perceives love, hate, and security. How it keeps grudges and forgives, is a mystery we will never know because we are human. God kept that secret to Himself.
Your brain has a switch that is called, Reticular Activity System, (RAS). This switch occurs at one of the two times.
1. when you become emotionally charged up or 2. When you relax. When you become emotionally charged as in fight or flight mode, the RAS switch shuts down your Cerebral cortex, (Your learning brain).
When the cerebral cortex shuts down, you proceed to Automatic Pilot, then your instinct and training take over.
There is another part of the brain called the Limbic system, (Set of brain structures that are located under the Cerebral Cortex and are involved in motivation and emotions). When it shuts down, because of relaxation and removal of threat, the RAS switches the cortex back on and allows creativity and logic to return to normal functions.
The RAS is responsible for several switches like:
1. Muscular activity.
2. Sleeping and wake up times. (time of the day, circadian clock)
3. Environmental sound.
4. Environmental aroma.
5. Temperature and humidity.
6. Sense of danger, interest, and opportunity.
7. Environmental light.
8. What has been ingested.
9. The recency of stressful times. And others.
The overall effect of these switches is to influence our levels of alertness.
Another feature in the brain is a synapse. This is where the neurons, or nerve cells connect with one another. Its functions are vital to our quality of life. A Typical nerve cell is composed of the main cell body (with a nucleus) and two branches, one outgoing and the other incoming. That serves as communication links with other cells. The outgoing branch is called the Axon, (it “Acts-On”) because it sends different messages, and messages are received at another branch called Dendrite, where it (ends-right). Does that make sense?
Each neuron is connected to hundreds of other neurons from 1thousand to 10 thousand synapses. It will take hundreds and hundreds of years to count synapse in the Cerebral cortex alone.
Learning is defined as the establishment of new neural networks composed of synaptic connections. This means new synapse appears after learning something new and it has its own language formed and filed in the brain. The alphabet of the physiological language is composed of over two hundred ligands. Ligands are secreted by nerve cells, immune cells, and other cells. They are like letters of the alphabet, with their words corresponding to behaviors. Ligands create two broad categories of effect. One is excitation or activation and the other is inhibition. The example is when one neurotransmitter will activate sleep and the other will inhibit it. Drinking milk will trigger the release of melatonin, and serotonin (for depression), neurotransmitters that activate sleep. Eating chocolate, coffee, etc will interfere with sleep.
You have two sides of the brain. That is if your head is cut in half between your two eyes towards the back of the head making the left side and the right side.
The left brain controls your right side of the body, that is why you are right-handed. The right brain controls the left side of the body, that is why some are left-handed.
The right side brain is the seat of language, logic, interpretation, and arithmetic. The left side brain is the seat of geometry, nonverbal processes, visual pattern recognition (faces, lines), auditory discrimination, and spatial skills (relating to the position, area, and size of things: 2. relating to the position, area, and size).
The left brain is for examining details, the right side looks at the big picture.
When it comes to spatial skills, males use the right side of the brain. Women use both sides. That is why they can cook, deal with a crying baby, and sweep the room, all done at the same time. Men, the baby will cry while cooking and not hear a thing, when men eventually hear they ignore if they think it is not an emergency. Not that they are careless, men's brains concentrate on one thing. That is why men do not always get emotional when overwhelmed with things, they deal with problems, one at a time, they do not have the brains to do everything at the same time.
When men are fighting, they concentrate. When women fight, they shout and cry at the same time. They have the two brains to do all that at the same time. The brain is very fascinating.
God bless you as you use your brain to think of God and the times we are now in. Jesus is coming sooner than we think. Do not waste your brain space on useless things.
When it comes to money, fame, and riches, you will not take them to the grave except your reputation and character. They are trash and it is all vanity.
Let us all live as those who will give an account of what we did while we were living in this body.
