WHY IS SLEEPING IMPORTANT?JUNE 2020 NEWSLETTER: BY DR JERRY J. MASARIRA, (NATUROPATH D. CBIS)
More than two thirds of adults in developed countries sleep less than six hours every night. To make matters worse I attended a church service where the preacher discouraged people from sleeping eight hours saying it is for children who are still growing.
Routinely sleeping less than seven hours daily will affect your immune system.
a. Your chances of having cancer are very high.
b. Your chances of developing Alzheimer’s disease are high.
c. Your chances of being pre-diabetic due to disrupted sugar levels are high.
d. Your likelihood of having blocked and brittle coronary arteries are high.
e. You are on your way to cardiovascular disease.
f. You are on your way to stroke.
g. You are on your way to Congestive heart failure.
h. You just entered a highway to Anxiety, depression, suicidality and psychiatric conditions.
Have you noticed when you are tired you eat more? It is because too little sleep activate your Ghrelin hormone (sometimes called, Lenomorelin) that make you feel hungry and suppressing a companion hormone Leptin that signals food satisfaction.
Does lack of sleep kill? The answer is yes.
1. There is a very rare genetic disorder that starts with a progressive insomnia (lack of sleep) which emerges in midlife. It starts several months before one stop to sleep completely. They start to lose basic brain functions. This problem has no drug treatment.
After about one and half years of no sleep, the person dies. This disorder is very rare, but it starts by lack of sleep.
2. The other cause is driving back home after a night duty or after driving through the night without resting.
How does your body know when to sleep?
We are all controlled by a circadian system. This allows us to feel sleepy at evening times and wake up at morning times. These are internal sleep-wake rhythms and the light-darkness cycle. We then develop sleeping problems when the rhythms are desynchronized because we would have broken the rhythm rules.
Your brain has a twenty-four hour biological clock sitting in the middle of it. It is called suprachiasmatic (pronounced soo-pra-kai-as-Matik) nucleus. The name means, Supra – Above, and Chiasm – Crossing Point. The crossing point is that of the optic nerves from your eyeballs. The nerves meet in the middle of the brain and then effectively Switch Sides.
The suprachiasmatic nucleus is situated above this intersection for a reason. Its job is to sample the light signal being sent from the two eyes along the optic nerves as they head towards the back of the brain for visual processing. The nucleus then uses this reliable light information to reset its inherent time inaccuracy to crisp twenty-four-hour cycle preventing any drift. The nucleus has 20,000 brain cells but it looks tiny. This tiny clock is the central conductor of your life’s biological rhythmic symphony that controls when to wake up and when to sleep.
The nucleus communicates its signals of day and night to the body and your brain by circulating a hormone called Melatonin, it’s a hormone of darkness, with a message to the whole body, “It is dark, it is time to sleep”
When sleep is under way, melatonin starts reducing its concentration during the night till morning hours. As the sunlight enters the brain, a brake pedal is applied to the pineal gland which shuts off the release of melatonin. The brain and body now know it is end of sleeping.
When you drink coffee and other juices to delay your sleep, you are actually disrupting your circadian rhythm. You will pay. There is nothing for free. The problem that arises from drinking coffee is that your liver has to send the principal enzyme called cytochrome to clear it from your system. This enzyme will degrade over time. Your liver is “Your life” once the liver FAILS to work, no help will come from anywhere. You cannot jumpstart your liver but your heart doctors can if done on time.
Here is what I need you to know. Sleeping is a requirement according to the rhythm, before 10 pm. The reason is, from 10 pm to 2 am, your body will be rearranging and cleaning to be ready for the following day work. This happens daily without fail as you follow sleeping rules of being asleep between 10pm to 2am. Those four hours on the center of your sleeping time are very critical for your health and life and extra four to make them eight hours.
When you are not already sleeping during those hours, the body stops doing its evening duties and postpone to the following 24 hours sleeping rhythm. Sleeping during the day to make up for the missed night sleep does not solve the problem. “It has to be at that same time of the night according to the circadian rhythm or else nothing happens” that is how strict the body works. You have to follow its rules of operation or else you get sick. Cars need serving. Our bodies are serviced between 10 pm and 2 am without fail, daily. If not, for a long time, you are going to breakdown.
What does that mean when it comes to NIGHT SHIFT WORKERS?
The answer is for YOU ONLY: No - Night -Shift. Period. Do not worry about essential services like hospitals. It is NOT your “Responsibility to keep it open” work during the day and go home. There will always be some who will volunteer to work at night regardless of the results they know will follow. That person should not be you.
Avoid it like leprosy. Here is the reason. Because of night shift and the circadian rhythm disrupted, you develop high blood pressure, you develop Diabetes, you develop obesity and you are on your way to Cancer and other diseases I have already mentioned above. That is why it is important sleeping during those hours. Anyone with the above diseases, does not sleep on time. They disrupted the circadian rhythm. The body has a FIXED system of operation or else it gets sick. Short cuts do not work for the body or else you short cut your life.
I could go on and on because the topic is very wide but what you have learned is for you and your children to live a good and healthy life. You do not need more information if you follow.
