Prostate Cancer: March 2020 NEWSLETTER: by BY DR JERRY J. MASARIRA, (NATUROPATH D. CBIS)
Almost all men as they get older, they have a certain level of expectation and fear of prostate cancer.
I thought of giving you a picture of what it is and what is involved.
A prostate is a gland. The term is used to describe a fluid producing organ. It churns out a seminal fluid which protects and nourishes sperms as they are in the female reproductive tract. It is stimulated by a surge of male hormones to grow and begin to churn out semen.
The prostate is located below the urinary bladder. It lies directly behind the pubic bone in front of the rectum. That is why the rear surface of the gland can be felt by a doctor when doing a DRE (digital rectal exam)
Part of the prostate surrounding the urethra, (urine passage) is called the transition zone. That is where the BPH (benign prostatic enlargement) occurs. When you are told that your prostate has enlarged. You wont miss it because it will squeeze your urine passage and make you straggle to urinate. Sometimes you get up at night several times with the urge to urinate, (nocturia). Many cases one does not urinate at all, its called acute urinary retention.
Now, hormones are messengers that use blood flow as transportation to different parts of the body.
Testosterone is the major sex hormone in males and plays a number of important roles, such as:
1. The development of the penis and testes
2. The deepening of the voice during puberty
3. The appearance of facial and pubic hair starting at puberty; later in life, it may play a role in balding.
4. Muscle size and strength
5. Bone growth and strength
6. Sex drive (libido)
7. Sperm production
Hormones work as a team. Since they are for many functions, they must balance, same as legs. One cannot be shorter and able to walk smoothly.
When hormones are disrupted due to many reasons, that could also cause prostate cancer.
The other reason is men have an enzyme called Aromatase. The job of this enzyme is to convert testosterone.
(A hormone that is produced in a man's testicles. Small amounts of testosterone are also produced in a woman's ovaries and adrenal system.)
Aromatase converts Testosterone to Estrogen. As men age, they produce more Estrogen than testosterone. Women as they age keep on producing testosterone. Lack of it in women sometimes cause autoimmune diseases, lupus, etc. More of it in women causes symptoms like excessive hair growth like beard.
Aromatase enzyme converts testosterone to Estradiol E2. This is the one that causes Prostate cancer. The other two estrogens Estrone E1 and Estriol E3 do not cause prostate cancer in men.
The reason why Enzyme Aromatase converts testosterone to Estradiol E2 is because the hormones are not balanced due to mostly foods and lifestyle that does not feed hormones with enough nourishment to protect the body. Since hormones are part of men sexual organ functions in making sperms the prostrate become the victim. Women do not get prostate cancer because they do not have prostate regardless of the estrogen they have. Does that make sense?
There are different types of prostate cancers like:
1. Neuroendocrine carcinoma – very aggressive and spreads early.
2. Transitional cell carcinoma – the prostatic ducts and urethra lining cancer spread to the prostate.
3. Ductal carcinoma – Adenocarcinomas that rise in or invade the ducts of the prostate.
4. Endometrial carcinoma – this is unusual and it treated like any prostate cancer.
Menopause is for women and men’s version is called Andropause. (Andr’ is Greek for man) That’s why we name boys Andrew.
Andropause make men grow big tummies and less active and more gentle.
That make men more gentle to grandchildren and hate to see their own sons beating their grandchildren as some form of discipline and yet before Andropause they used to do the same.
It is not that they are sympathetic, it is andropause in charge. Hormones have changed.
Prostate cancer can be avoided as long as you eat organic foods grown not processed foods. Not all men end up with prostate cancer.
Like any disease it can be avoided as long as you watch what you eat.
The fact that you are a man does not mean “You will have prostate cancer” No, it does not work like that.
Take care of your body and it will take care of you as you grow old.
If you are careless, there will always be consequences, further down the road.
