Digestion and assimilation: August 2020 Newsletter: by Dr Jerry J. Masarira,(Naturopath D. CBIS)
Eating good food will not stop you from experiencing bad digestion as well as assimilate what you eat. You need to be able to break down your food or else you are generating rancid and toxic compounds that can disrupt your health.
Bad digestion is an epidemic problem these days. This has caused a lot of people have their gall-bladder removed and also appendectomies done.
Many of us produce very little hydrochloric acid (HCL) and that causes several health problems such as follows:-
1. Poor digestion as well as absorption of proteins or amino acids that are necessary for over 50,000 body functions. Functions include neurotransmitter production for regular moods, repair of cells, organs, bones and tissues.
2. Poor absorption of key minerals like, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, boron, iron, cobalt, and zinc. Zinc is also needed to make HCL. That means if you are deficient in zinc your body can not produce enough HCL, causing a chain of health issues.
3. Poor HCL production by parietal cells in the stomach impairs proper B12 digestion necessary for brain health. Under digestion of B12 leads to under secretion of “Intrinsic factor” essential for the absorption of B12 in the gut. B12 is a key methyl donor, and good for cardiovascular and brain health as well as making red blood cells. That means some brain problems that end as cognitive functioning, dementia, macrocytic anemia, heart disease or Alzheimer’s disease started due to a B12 deficiency.
4. Poorly digested chyme in the stomach results in fermenting and causing gas and bloating. This also leads to mucosal and microvilli erosion, what is often called Leaky gut syndrome.
5. You become vulnerable to parasites and other food-bone illness.
If deficiency of HCL continues for a longtime, H.pylori can occur in an acidic environment in the stomach causing ulceration of endothelial tissue causing gastritis and ulcers.
H.pylori should not be eradicated completely, we need a little bit because it plays a role in regulating leptin. Leptin is the one that regulates how much fat is needed in the body. How one becomes obese or lose weight is determined and controlled by your leptin levels.
HCL is produced in the presence of proteins and more in meat eaters. It is inhibited by sugars and starches. Vegetarians do not produce a lot of HCL by virtue of not eating animal protein.
Thyroid hypofunction, (Thyroid that is low functioning) suppresses gastrin production. Gastrin is a hormone necessary for signaling HCL production. There could also be some deficiencies of vitamin B1, Vitamin C, and Zinc, that reduce production of HCL.
Proper hydrochloric acid production is the root for a good digestion process.
Digestion begins in the brain. This means, the body and mind must be relaxed and calm so that digestion could occur properly. That relationship is called a parasympathetic process.
A lot will happen to disrupt your health. Like I mentioned before about removal of gall-bladder. No one should convince you that you do not need it. Your body parts are there for a reason and purpose. Living without one will lead to a life long issues with inadequate fat and fat-soluble nutrient digestion, deficiencies, fatigue, hormonal imbalances etc.
If you do not have a gall-bladder, you need to take bile salts from a health food shops where they sale supplements.
Take bile salts with every fat containing meal and this is a must. Take care that you do not develop deficiencies of essential fatty acids (EFA) and vitamins A, D, E and K.
Remember we were created to eat fat, that is the reason you have gall-bladder in the first place.
Everything begins and ends with proper digestion. You need to work on improving this part of your health to live a healthy life.
